Taliesin Preservation of Spring Green, WI is looking for a Vegetable Gardener to support our seasonal work-study culinary program. Would you like to participate in seed-to-compost learning on the Taliesin estate, Frank Lloyd Wright's Wisconsin historical home? This position pays $14.00 - $15.00 per hour over a 16 hours workweek. In addition, we may be able to provide opportunities on other estate garden duties or with our Driftless area agricultural partners as an additional source of income. If you like the idea of getting your hands dirty while you help others learn, apply now!

ABOUT TALIESIN PRESERVATION AND THE FOOD ARTISAN IMMERSION PROGRAM

As stewards of the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, our dual mission is to preserve the cultural, built, and natural environments that comprise the Taliesin property and to conduct educational and cultural programs that provide a greater understanding of his architecture and ideas. We are different from other historic sites because we are not satisfied with just being a museum. We want the estate to stay filled with life.

For over a century, Taliesin and the surrounding Driftless hills and valleys have served as a laboratory for living. There is an energy here that captures and engages people, and the staff, without exception, is made up of creative people who care passionately about their work and are full of ideas. We are a small organization and we offer a lot of flexibility and opportunity for people to develop within their areas of interest. We are invested in their success!

The Food Artisan Immersion Program builds naturally on this by using an approach to food that integrates ecology, art, craft, community, and region.

The Taliesin Vegetable Garden will be an integral part of the Food Artisan Immersion Program (FAIP), an introductory culinary course, exploring the regionally reliant foodways of Wisconsin's greater sustainable and regenerative agricultural community. Community advocacy around food and accessibility plays an integral role in the teachings of FAIP. The garden also perpetuates the principles of organic living that were Wright's original vision for Taliesin through the integration of farming in the academic, cultural, and communal day-to-day activities on the 800-acre property in Spring Green, WI.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A VEGETABLE GARDENER

As a Vegetable Gardener, you are excited to be part of this amazing program that draws its inspiration from Wright's organic vision that the arts, community, agriculture, food, and learning are integrally connected with the land. You embrace being immersed in an approach to food as an agricultural act, a cultural act, and as inextricably connected to the community.  You work to help plan and maintain the garden while mentoring FAIP participants on gardening skills and techniques. You get opportunities to learn from the cultural and natural gardening team on the Taliesin estate as well as our Driftless area agricultural partners and other stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A VEGETABLE GARDEN INTERN

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Interest and experience in gardening
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, and lift at least 50 lbs
  • Passion for local, sustainable foods, and being an ambassador for a seed-to-table curriculum

Do you have a strong work ethic and love for learning? Are you interested in food sources and regenerative food production? Do you possess the curiosity for creative experimentation? Can you take direction and work well with others with varying skillsets? Are you flexible and able to "roll with the flow"? Do you like to interact with new and diverse people? If this sounds like you, you might just be perfect as a Vegetable Gardener at Taliesin!
